AREAS - EAST

John Shafer at Stowe

Almost every ski area now has glades. Some are even marked as such. Some are known only by the locals or discovered by hunting. The following are some areas that have great tree skiing.

CANADA - QUEBEC
mt-sutton.com - Renouned for it's glades, this naturally divided area with beginner slopes on the right to advanced terrain on the left, has some of the best treeskiing in the east. The intermediate and advanced area is almost totally gladed. The exchange rate is also a big bonus!

MAINE

sundayriver.com - Oz and Jordan Bowl.

VERMONT
skiburke.comTree skiing at Burke- A couple of years ago, Burke started to do a lot of thinning, and now there are a lot of treeskiing areas all over the place. Some of them are easy to find on the map, others you have to look carefully for. Their "Woods Skiing and Riding Policy" is prominently printed on the trail map. Try the long run off of Wilderness. Just around the corner from the picnic hut off of Powderhorn is a shorter run with a little steep section. About halfway down Mountain Marsh on the left is a real sweet area of fairly open spaced burch. An expansion is in the works which will replace the existing quad with a new detatch quad and move the old one over to the East Bowl.

Jay Peak tree skier
jaypeakresort.com - Also renouned for it's glades, Jay has a boundry - to - boundry policy. This means freshies all day if you know where to go. Jay has 18 designated glades. The longest, Everglade, is 1 1/4 miles. The entrance is near the top of the Green Mtn. Flyer. Steep treelined chutes greet you, but it soon widens and flattens out. Vertigo is also steep and narrow. At just about the right time, it merges into a flatter and more spacious area named Buckaroo Bonzai. For some, it will be way too late. Skiing Valhalla reminds one of skiing out west through the pines. Bonaventure Glade has nicely spaced hardwoods on a gentle pitch that form awesome moguls! Canyon Land is a little flatter and more spacious run also through hardwoods. Jay is sure to suit everyone's treeskiing tastes!

Low Rider
killington.com - Killington's Fusion Zones are mostly where it's at. Squeeze Play (inter.), Low Rider (movie) (adv.), and Julio (exp.) are on the map. There are lots of other places if you explore.

madriverglen.com - Ski It If You Can actually has two meanings. Some of the steepest glades are here and they have hardly any snowmaking. Go when there's lots of snow. Off the Single Chair you'll find Fall Line, Upper and Lower Glades, and Paradise. There are a multitude of choices all over the mountain. For a nearly top-to-bottom run, take the Sunnyside Double and go left. Take the second entrance just past Upper Panther.

Tree skiing at Stowe
stowe.com - Turn left at the bottom of the last switchback on Nosedive. Glades is a quick ride, but you can keep going into some tighter trees. Another good area is to the right of Chin Clip near the bottom. Tres Amigos Glade is the longest designated glade on the mountain. Befriend a local and ask him to take you to The Kitchen Sink.

sugarbush.com - Paradise, when there's enough snow, has steep trees and some chutes. Very spacious and easier runs are Sleeper and Moonshine. The best glade is Eden. Tight turns at the top soon open to a spacious bowl followed by rolling, flatter sections. Egan's Woods between Stein's Run and Murphy's Glade, isn't open often unless there's a lot of snow. The enterance is steep and tight leading into a pine forest. It soon mellows out, but is still pretty tight. Deep Sleeper, between Sleeper and Water Fall, begins flat then turns left down a steep and narrow chute. It too widens and mellows out.
